Orion’s Fish Fudgies

12 to 14 oz of canned tuna, salmon or mackerel - do not drain
1 1/2 cups unbleached all purpose flour
1 teaspoon minced garlic (optional)
2 eggs
Grated parmesan cheese (optional)

Process fish, garlic and eggs in food processor or blender or mix in a bowl, mashing thoroughly with a fork. Add remaining ingredients and mix to a brownie-like consistency. Spread into a 9x9-inch greased pan.

Bake at 350 degrees F for 20 minutes. When the fudgies are done, they will have a putty-like texture and the edges will pull away from the sides of the pan. Let cool until easy to handle, then cut into bars. These bars are easy to break up but don’t crumble easily. I usually cut them into three strips one way and eight or nine strips the other way.

Allow to cool thoroughly before putting into a sealed container.

Will keep for one week in the refrigerator or six months in the freezer.

Orion’s Fish Crunchies

Same ingredients as above. After mixing, spread in a 9x15-inch greased pan. The dough will be about ¼ inch thick; if you want thinner crunchies, use a bigger pan or divide into two pans.

Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. When the dough is done, it will pull away from the sides of the container. Remove from the oven and allow to cool until easy to handle. Reduce the oven heat to 300 degrees.

Using a pizza cutter (the type with a rolling metal wheel), cut the dough into strips one way and then the other way. This dough does not rise appreciably nor does it shrink. I like to cut it into quarter inch cubes.

Use a spatula to pick up the pieces and spread out in a single layer making sure the pieces aren’t touching. One tray of dough will make about 1 ½ trays of crunchies. Place in the oven and bake for about one hour. The crunchies are done when they feel hard and barely springy to the tip of a spoon pressed on top. If they burn a little on the bottom, don’t worry—most dogs are not connoisseurs and will love them burned. If you want to prevent burning, I recommend using Air-Bake cookie trays.

Allow to cool thoroughly before placing in a sealed container. These will keep for one week at room temperature, one month in the refrigerator and six months in the freezer. My thanks to Shirley for her recipe!!

Ok, so most of you know that my daughter is a hairstylist. She specializes in color! It is difficult for us to coordinate our schedules as she works constantly!! So, when she was coming over for her birthday, we decided to throw in a quick cut and color!

Rather than have her bring all the supplies, I volunteered that I had what we needed!! So, after the birthday celebration...off we go upstairs to do the quick hair thing. Now...I had not used these particular products in awhile...no problem! Or so I thought.

Are you freaking kidding me????? Let me explain...Meish was in a hurry so when she was done, I said goodbye and I'd dry my hair after she left.

Said hair was dry after she left and I was TOTALLY freaking out! C'mon...I do NOT look good in this color! I know that there really are some humans who like to have orange hair. I am not one of them. I looked like a really bad Lucille Ball imitation!!

Ok, so now it is late...after midnight and I am trying to figure out what to do as I know that Meish has a full client day. I also didn't want her to think that SHE did something wrong. As I actually figured out that the developer that I thought was new...was NOT!! So...apparently OLD developer does not mix well with color...weird reaction!!

I texted her on Saturday in the afternoon and she told me to come right over after her last client.

She FIXED it!!!

I am over the moon happy!!! SO happy!!! Nothing like having my very own hair back!!

No...those pictures up there were not my ACTUAL hair. I refuse to post those on my blog.

The girlz were not amused by this turn of events. Chloe was in her crate when I got home as she pooped in the living room to show her dad that she wasn't happy that mama left AGAIN!!

Wrapping up the Weekend

We are still watching LadyBug closely as she is still clearly not back to her normal self. She is still being picked up to go up and down stairs. She is being carried when she has to go outside. As much as she wants to run and play...we just cannot let her do that. Every single time she even tries to play....just a little...she starts not using the leg again.

She's still on the metacam once per day and I am trying the heating pad. My friend suggested a heated, vibrating foot bath. I haven't yet tried that because even with the heating pad...she doesn't seem quite comfortable. She is still a little bit skittish about "strange" things. So...I am trying to massage by hand and make sure she stays ON the bed at night. The biggest challenge is that she loves to follow me everywhere, so I am having to stay PUT more than I'd like to...in other words...laundry is piling up...things that should be getting done...aren't.

LadyBug's health is more important to me...so we will stay huddled close while she is recuperating.

Tonight we enjoyed the Golden Globes Awards on tv in front of the fireplace...both her and Chloe love that!

Hope you had a great weekend!! It is eight degrees right now...quite frigid!!

LadyBug's Injury!

LadyBug was back at the vet for an emergency visit. We had run out to the store to get some groceries. Upon our return, the girlz were at the garage door waiting to go out to do their business....which is normal behavior. It was NOT normal behavior when LadyBug started crying loudly and trying to get underneath my car.

I knew that something was really wrong! I dialed the vet's number...knowing that they were closed, and praying that someone would answer that phone!! I said I'd bring her right over. It's only about a five minute ride. When I got there, all the lights in the building are off and there is only one car in the lot. I'm thinking....this is really weird. (Come to find out....I had dialed the wrong vet!)

But, I was in panic mode and started pounding on the door when I saw a person inside. The person just happened to be one of the vets!! He told me it would be an extra $95.00 for an emergency visit. At this point, I was holding LadyBug and she was clearly in pain...uncomfortable. I said...let's just find out what is going on. So...in we go...and little Miss LadyBug decides that she is going to wag her tail and prance around the room like there isn't anything wrong with her!!

Gah! I felt like a jerk. So, as I am explaining to the vet what had happened...and showed him a short video that I had taken...it appears that what is going on (again) is that LadyBug has a luxating patella ... on both sides ... and one or both of them had gotten out of whack and then popped back in again. The vet did a complete exam...more thorough than any exam she had ever had before! We decided at this point to treat her with a shot of Metacam and she must go on a little diet. Which isn't going to be easy for her. LadyBug loves food!! Fortunately, some of the things she likes are carrots!

The baby gates have made an appearance once again and we are carrying her up and down stairs for the time being. She is feeling much better now, but trying to keep these little ones "quiet" is a very difficult thing to do!! Trying to get her to rest as much as possible.

Chloe was clearly very worried about her when we returned home! She kissed her and acted like she hadn't seen her in about five years! Now, Chloe is going to play nurse until her sister is back up and feeling like herself again!!

Hoping that this isn't going to be a long and drawn out injury...and also hoping we can manage with medication. We do not give it to her unless she absolutely needs it!!

We have several new readers and I don't know how many of you remember that when we went south we had quite the episode with the RV! It was REALLY windy while we were barreling down the interstate when all of a sudden, we heard this huge crackling / ripping type noise!! We slowed down and pulled off to the side of the highway as best we could. It turns out that the awning was being unraveled and pulled out of its housing. We had to do something and QUICK! We slowly creeped along another 500 feet or so and pulled safely out of harm's way. Both of us jumped out...after securing the girlz. I held the "stick" thing that rolls the awning up, while Ben climbed up on the roof and tried to fix the problem from there. We managed between the two of us to get it wind-proofed enough to get to our next destination.

By this time, the girlz were going CRAZY as they do not like to stop along the highway. And they certainly do not like us to stop and get out WITHOUT them!! So....knowing that they had to GO. I put them both on their leashes and lifted them onto the grassy area where they could do their business. This happened along the roadway somewhere between North Carolina and South Carolina...I can't remember exactly where. Little did I know that there are hidden dangers in the south...little buggers called Foxtails!!

These things were unbelievable!!! And we had this problem ALL over the south! I do not know how people deal with it on a daily basis. I was always picking them out of the girlz' fur...their feet, their ears, my hair, the couch, the bed, the carpet...they were everywhere!!

I've compiled a bit of info about them...just thought it might help someone else!! Seriously....I almost passed out after I read about these awful things!!

Foxtails, or grass awns, are arrow-shaped stickers that are produced by some types of grasses that have gone to seed. Foxtails carry grass seeds. They evolved to embed in the skin and be spread by animals.

Foxtails cause a large number of problems for pets. Their shape promotes deep penetration into, as well as movement (migration) within the skin. Foxtails have the potential to cause infection and irritation in any area of the body in which they occur.

Foxtails commonly embed in the skin, ears, eyes, and nose. They may lodge in the throat!! Foxtails can migrate throughout the body, causing irritation and infection in the lungs, heart, and other internal organs.

The skin and the area under the skin are the most common sites for foxtails in pets. The most frequently affected areas are the feet (especially the webbed areas between the toes) and the anterior portions of the chest and shoulders. Foxtails embedded in or under the skin cause swelling, pain, redness, and drainage of clear or bloody fluid from the site. Pets often lick the affected area of skin, and hair loss may occur. Limping is common if a foxtail is embedded in the foot.

Foxtails located in the eye cause severe swelling, pain, and discharge in the affected eye. The eye usually will be held tightly closed. If located in the nose, foxtails usually cause violent sneezing. Mucus or blood may drain from one nostril.

Foxtails located in the ear may cause head shaking, scratching or pawing at the ear, and an abnormal posture with one ear tilted downwards. An ear infection may develop in the affected ear, or the eye on the affected side may begin to appear abnormal.

Foxtails that lodge behind the tonsils may cause a dry, honking cough or frequent, hard swallowing. Foxtails that migrate through the body can lodge in the lungs, heart, or other internal organs and may cause severe lethargy, lack of appetite, weight loss, coughing, or difficulty breathing.

Foxtails occur in grassy, outdoor areas. Animals that hunt or play in uncut grass are at highest risk. Foxtails may blend in and go unnoticed (and therefore un-removed) in animals with tawny or straw colored hair.

Pets that squat to urinate on seeded grass are at risk of a foxtail lodging in their genitalia. Pets that eat seeded grass are at risk for foxtails lodging behind the tonsils or in the mouth or throat.

Regardless of location, foxtails cause pain and irritation. They very frequently cause infection in the surrounding area. Foxtails in the skin may cause chronic draining sores. In the eye, foxtails can cause ulcers and infection. Foxtails in the ear can cause ear infections, and can penetrate the ear drum to cause hearing damage and neurological problems.

Until they are removed, foxtails often cause chronic infection in and irritation to the structure in which they are located. The long-term nature of these issues can be extremely frustrating.

Foxtails have a tendency to migrate through the body, and can move to areas such as the lungs, heart, liver, or other internal organs. When located in these sites severe illness and death can occur.

In many instances, foxtails are difficult to locate. This can lead to significant frustration. Foxtails are not visible on X-rays. However, inflammation and swelling associated with foxtails may be detectable on X-rays or CT (computerized tomography) scans.

If a foxtail can be located, physical removal is the most effective treatment. Depending on the location, sedation or anesthesia may be required to search for and remove a foxtail.

Antibiotics often are used to treat infections that foxtails have triggered. Affected areas may be cleaned and flushed with antiseptic solutions. Pain killers are appropriate in many cases.

If a foxtail is suspected but cannot be located and removed, long-term antibiotics often are coupled with aggressive flushing and cleaning of the affected area.
After a foxtail is located and removed, most symptoms resolve rapidly over 24 - 96 hours. Persistent symptoms may indicate the presence of additional foxtails or of other medical problems.

A Surprise Box from Our Friends...

Chloe and Gracie!!! We were SO excited to receive a box in the mail today! It seems we are the winners in a Giveaway!!! This special box was addressed specifically to US...Chloe and LadyBug!!! WOOHOO!!!

And mama even let us open it right away! Now that's a switch! We were SO excited to find lots of great things in this surprise box!!! We got two very cool new stuffies...one cow and one monkey!!! And they SQUEAK!!! Yep. The squeakers REALLY work!!! Then there were some really good COOKIES in the box...LadyBug has pretty much claimed those as HERS! They are Apple Flavored!! A new book for mama to read... it is called, "Christmas with Tucker", which sounds like a fabulous book and one we just know mama will enjoy reading! Some funny napkins were also in this box...ones that say, "On The Internet...No One Knows Your a Dog" BOL!!!!

The Christmas Tree

The Accident

Oh boy....Charlie was in a bit of trouble because he and his parents came to visit us and our barking kind of scared him. He took off running for the ROAD! Charlie's dad went running after him and slipped and fell really BAD. He had to go immediately to the hospital and he broke his collar bone....like in HALF!!!

Sue basically just threw Charlie into mama's arms and took off for the hospital. So...here are some pics of our evening with our buddy...we were trying to keep him calm because he was VERY worried about his dad.

At first he was ~~really freaking out~~ kinda scared as he has never been left at our house by himself before. But, mama went out to the car and got his blanket and he settled in nicely to have some dinner and share some bones with us!

We feel bad that Benj is going to be hurting for a LONG time as it'll be about three MONTHS before he gets better. But, he is home and we are glad that he is taking it easy.

PS...Charlie is very happy that his dad is going to be spending some time at home with him...he is currently ~~sucking up~~ napping on his lap.

LadyBug here!! Do you see me up there....I am neglected and sad. Mama is spending ALL of her time working on decorating for the holidays and something she is calling an "Exchange" which entails her sitting for ~~EVER~~ many hours writing out cards and putting stamps on them...then she gets in the car and drives to the post office...WITHOUT me. The nerve!!

I am trying to decide what to get the girlz...

Several things have already arrived, but I still have a few things I am debating about. Have any of you tried the Drinkwell Original Fountain? It seems to be mostly used by cats, but I was thinking it might be good to convince the girlz to drink more water??

I would be interested to know if any of you have tried any of the drinking fountains currently on the market and if so...what are your thoughts??

Sister Dogs...the Visit!

I stopped over to visit my Dad the other day and my sister has acquired two more dogs! So, the family now includes four adopted shelter dogs: one lab mix, one golden mix (from Hurricane Katrina), and two bichon frises!!

It sure was LOUD at their house....thinking perhaps some sort of behavioral modification training might be in order!! They are all real nice dogs though!!

Mama was pretty sad as one of her oldest friends passed away on Monday. Actually it was her former Mother In Law.

Ben had to go to the Dr. (and he NEVER, EVER goes to the Doctor...so we knew that he was REALLY sick!). Turns out he has bronchitis so they gave him so medicine to make him sleep and feel better!

So...we did alot of lying around this weekend...doing nothing.

Miss Chloe has been at the vet this week...she had to have her Rabies / Distemper shot and annual visit. We also noticed that she had a growth of sorts...and we had been watching it for awhile. It was actually a cluster of fluid filled bumps inside the folds of her ear. It was not bothering her...was not red or discolored...but in the past couple weeks, it seemed to get a little bigger. So, I had the vet check it out and she aspirated them. Dr. Dewey says that these fluid filled cysts are quite common in dogs of a certain umm...age. So, we will continue to keep a close watch.

Chloe was a trooper and didn't cry, but holy moly I needed some valium...she was CRAZY nervous in the car on the way to the vet and then we had to wait about an hour!! Her tongue was all curled up and she was just beside herself by the time Dr. Dewey could see us.

LadyBug was a nervous WRECK while we were gone, but she was SO HAPPY to greet Chloe upon her return!! She had to smell Chloe's boo-boo...where she had the blood drawn...and the shots.

All's well for now...and so glad that's over!!

We have ALWAYS celebrated Halloween! I mean always.

Not this year though. There has been WAY too much craziness around here with the vehicle situation and having to leave the Jeep up North and renting a car to go get it....

It's all good...because we are so happy to tell you that today we got this:

And out carseats fit really great in the back seat!! That's a bonus!!

We then had to spend like the ENTIRE day in the car. A tiny little car. Mama called it a RENTAL car.

The good news is we went to pick up her Jeep! Ben drove it home and it seems to be running good...so a couple thousand bucks later...guess that's a good thing.

Halloween TREATS!!!

We are excited about Halloween!!! How about some of these treats??? Have your mama whip these up for your scary snacks!!

TRICKY TREATS FOR DOGS
Makes 14 treats

2 cups water
3/4 cup canned applesauce
1/8 teaspoon vanilla
1 egg
3 cups whole-wheat flour
1 cup white flour
1/4 cup chopped nuts
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 cup oats

Preheat oven to 350 F.

In a bowl, mix water, applesauce, vanilla and egg thoroughly.

In a separate bowl, combine flour, nuts, baking powder, nutmeg, and cinnamon, stirring well.

Add wet ingredients to dry and mix well.

Spoon into greased muffin tins, filling each cup completely and bake for about 1 1/4 hours. Cool completely and store in a sealed container.

Please remember... If your pet has food allergies or special dietary requirements, check with your vet to see if your pet can eat these!!!!

Beemer FINALLY Came for a Visit!!

Beemer FINALLY came for a visit!!! We haven't seen him since JULY!!! We haven't seen his mom since then either....so Meish came over to do Mama's hair...she was REALLY happy about that. She DESPERATELY needed it to be done!! ~~It looked really bad!!~~ We probably should keep that to ourselves.

Anyway, Beemer really loves to vacuum with mama so that's what they did for fun while he was here! He also enjoyed a few of our Cesar treats and he loves to come here for dinner because he doesn't get to eat any of that fabulous Sirloin Steak Cesar Food for dinner at his house!

Beemer was sporting his special SQUIRREL Halloween Costume that his mom got for him at Target!

He wanted to show it to us because we won't get to spend Halloween with him...he is going to a PARTAY!!!

What do you think??? Do you think Beemer looks cute in his costume?? We are NOT looking forward to posing for mama in our costumes...

Just a Quick Update

Yes, we are home. We do NOT have my Jeep. It has been towed to the Jeep Dealer about 150 miles from here. HOPEFULLY it will be fixed before next weekend...I've rented a car for then...to go and pick it up. In the meantime, we are looking at the 2012 Ford Fiesta...or the Focus...not sure yet.

I do believe the girlz will be happy with the smaller vehicle...they loved the Fiesta when we rented it before!

That's all I got for my Manic Monday....that's how I feel today!

The Saga Continues...

Here's an update...it is not good news. We have been through two new alternators and the mechanic still has absolutely no clue as to what is wrong with my Jeep. They are working on a process of elimination and have the Jeep Dealer involved. It appears at the moment like it might be the power control module...or something like that.

The fact is...no car!! So we had to unload all the crap that we had stuffed into the Jeep. Ben took his little car (which is only a two seater) and filled it with a bunch of the small bags and drove back home. Tomorrow he is driving the RV back so we can fill it up with all of the "stuff" that needs to be moved back home. With the temperatures dipping close to freezing, we just can't put off closing the cottage any longer. Too much chance of freezing pipes...Lord knows...we do not need any more water problems!! The Jeep will be here for awhile we suspect. So....we will probably end up renting a car that will fit all of us and do a one way Enterprise Rental when the Jeep is ready to be picked up. The RV needs to be winterized also...we try to do that prior to November 1st.

So....while we are here...we decided to work on some more tree trimming!! The girlz love exploring!! If only I could keep LadyBug from rolling!

On a side note...LadyBug's ear seems to be feeling much better!!

Chaos Continued...the LadyBug Edition

Still without a vehicle.

The prognosis looks kind of like those ominous skies!

In the midst of the car chaos...LadyBug developed an ear problem...and kept us from sleeping and she seemed pretty miserable.

A couple hundred dollars later...she had two injections...one of prednisone and one of an antibiotic.

LadyBug seems to be feeling much better now!

At least we got that going for us...

One of THOSE Days!

As you all know, I have been very busy packing up and trying to get this place closed up for the winter. Finally today we got everything loaded in to my Jeep. When I say loaded...it was freakin' packed! just got the girlz in their seats...said goodbye to my husband ... Who was driving his car home...I turn the key and the car is acting VERY weird! The car is shaking ... The odometer and gauges are flashing. WHAT????

Ben gets in the driver's seat because we all just KNOW that men can figure this crap out better when THEY are in the driver's seat. Come to find out ... Cue the music ... The alternator crapped out! I call AutoZone for the part...no problem...they have it in stock! Ben ONLY has to drive 40 minutes away to get it. So...while he is gone I go back inside and turn the fridge back on...turn the gas back on...go get the coolers out of both cars and load everything back into the fridge.

By the time I'm done...Ben is back with the part. The two of us are outside FREEZING and wet...trying to get the old part out so we can install the new one. Oh Joy. It is the WRONG part! Now of course you know that I must have given the guy at Auto Zone the wrong make/model. WRONG!! Come to find out...after calling AdvanceAuto that my Jeep alternator is not that common and they have to order it from the factory which can take up to SEVEN days!!! Are you kidding me? Ok...whatever. Order the part. We are hoping it will be here by Wednesday! Tomorrow...we have to return the first alternator. Grrrrrrrrrr.

Then I had to figure out which boxes and bags I could get to in order to throw something together for dinner.

On the plus side....I am VERY glad we still have water and internet!! And very glad this did not happen while I was driving on the Thruway.
