Birthdays: YOUR Opinion Please!

I have something on my mind today. Birthdays. My husband and I are in total disagreement when it comes to Birthdays. In my mind, it is a special day and one that should be celebrated with pomp and circumstance!! Shout it from the rooftops!! Balloons!! Cake!! Gifts!! Special EVERYTHING!! According to me....one cannot have too many balloons, cakes, gifts, etc.

I grew up in a family where we really celebrated every single holiday. We had special cupcakes on Valentine's Day and St. Patrick's Day we wore green carnations or green bows in our hair. Birthdays, we were always made to feel special. My mom poured her heart into the batter when she made our special cakes. I do not share my mother's talent for baking. Believe me, our local bakery does a much better job than I do!!

A couple of years ago, I had a girlfriend who shared my feelings about birthdays. But, she went OVER the top!! She made that birthday SO very special for me, I will never, ever forget it. Most of the time, I spend my birthday alone at the cottage and we celebrate on the weekend when my husband comes. That particular year, Linda made sure that every single thing was perfect for my day. She went to a bakery in the next town over and had them custom make a beautiful cake. She put really special candles on this cake. She took me to THE best restaurant over in the next town. There wasn't one thing about that day that slipped through the cracks. It was a perfect birthday and one I will never, ever forget.

On the other hand, my husband, prefers to totally forget his birthday. Who in the hell does that?? I think it's weird. Totally weird. So, I go all out anyway. Secretly, I think he would miss it if I didn't. We have been married for 15 years this year so he's used to it by now. When he woke up, there was a giant "Happy Birthday" written on the bathroom mirror in lipstick. When he came downstairs, there was a card next to his keys that I digitally created just for him. Usually I leave a note in his car for him wishing him a Happy Birthday.

We just spoke on the phone and I told him I was planning a special birthday dinner. His response, "Why don't we just have the leftover ham?" "What's the sense in cooking something else when we have stuff in the fridge?"

Is the man crazy? You tell me.

I'm pretty sure that "is the man crazy" is redundant...lol.

Tell the man Happy Birthday for me - and by the way, it is birthday day over at Pioneer Woman, too!

Happy birthday to the Man!

I think Birthdays should be special too and my husband is also ho-hum about them. We only get so many of them and I believe every single one should be celebrated!

Happy Birthday to your husband. I am in agreement with him. It is funny, I just wrote a long thing on Robinella's post today, so won't rewrite it here. What is it that made that birthday special above all others? I will tell you, it was special above all others. I sounds like you don't have a big hoopla for each birthday, but do something with your husband near then. I am happy to go out to eat with Sirdar, have one or two people give me a call and I love to get a surprise give from someone I don't know even remembers. That is special. I don't need anything gifts from Sirdar, I can buy what I want and think we can afford. I guess it is how each of us was raised, and what our expectation is because of it. Ultimately, it is our attitude when that expectation isn't met that affects our life. If you don't expect something, what you get is so much more special, like what your friend did for you.

Happy birthday Mr. Bluez.

My birthday was last weekend and it was the first party where we didn't celebrate it with a big bash (my Mom was the same way growing up). And it actually wasn't so bad. Although not very memorable. :)

I love celebrating other people's birthday but not my own. So I'm a bit like your hubby. In fact I'm a party pooper~it's my birthday soon and embee asked if I wanted to go out for dinner and I said no!! yes I'm quite mad I know.

I have got to figure out how to change your blog background to anything but black...my eyes go buggy with the white on black. But that is just me....I'll figure something out.

I like to celebrate things. Dawn doesn't. She and your husband would be perfect birthday people together. Me and you would go out and have a good time!! I wonder who would have more fun....

He is totally nuts. Birthdays should be screamed from the rooftops. And, written in smoke from a biplane. Bah humbug to the spouse. If he doesn't want to go over the top, save the money & do something GRAND on yours.

I don't go ALL out on birthdays but we definitely make the birthday person feel extra special on their day. After all, a birthday only comes once a year and as you get older you tend to appreciate turning that one year older more I think. Not that I'm 100 or anything but who knows. Maybe one day :o) So you should move closer to me and you, me and Sirdar will go out and celebrate our birthdays together because we all seem to like a 'little' celebration on that special day. Oh and of course big Happy Birthday wishes to your hubby!

I like a big fuss on my birthday from three people-my DH, and my 2 kids. Anyone else even saying Happy Birthday to me is very embarrassing to me. Not because I'm old or anything, its just personal for me.

I love making a huge deal about DH & the kids birthdays, my friends birthdays, holidays. But mine is for me and my immediate homies only.
