Opinions Please!

I am interested in your opinion regarding holiday gifts...

Do you think handmade gifts are a good idea?

Just trying to solicit some input so that I can make an informed decision on which way to go....

I am thinking in terms of Trivets / Coasters / Picture Frames...etc.

Thanks!!! I really appreciate your input!

Handmade is always the best way to go... I know I treasure the gifts I've gotten that were MADE by friends and family...

This morning I was dusting and I ran across the phone caddy my dad made for me. My dad passed away suddenly 18 months ago. You have no idea how comforting it was to look at that caddy, touch it and remember my dad. Maybe at our age, chachkas and zotkies mean less and less and the history and person behind them more and more. This afternoon I looked for and found all the table linens my grandma embroidered. I will use a tablecloth this thanksgiving, and I will cover it with plastic... because it means that much to me and I would like to pass them on to my daughter without stains...
Oh boy I am getting to be such a sentimental an old fart. And I used to be known as the only living heart donor!!!! Silvieon4's mom- Silvieon2

I love handmade but this is always a dilemma for me as well. I think maybe it depends on who you're giving to?

We are having a handmade Christmas this year - partly because of the economy and partly because I want to make memories, too.

Well, looks like the general concensus says handmade, and that gets my vote as well.

I was shocked yesterday. My husband only has his mom and sister and her daughter to buy Christmas presents for. Well, the other day, I told DH I was tired of going to the mall to buy three gift cards! And in return, we would receive gift cards. How exciting is that? In speaking to his mom yesterday, she said she doesn't want to exchange gifts any longer....the gift cards are just too hard to obtain or use!!!

Christmas seems to be becoming more and more "bah-humbug" it would seem.

So...I think something that is homemade and tailored to the recipient is far better than anything store bought!!!!

I think it depends on the person you're giving it to. My in-laws love and appreciate handmade gifts while my side of the family, not so much. Of course, then you have to be crafty enough to make handmade gifts, but in your case you are...

Everyone puts too much emphasis on the gift - like it's going to do something (mend a relationship, make the giver seem more valuable, etc.). A gift CAN have many meanings. I think the gift should be specially chosen or made for the recipient. A handmade gift is wonderful, especially when it's made with the recipient's personality in mind. All gifts come from the heart. Handmade gifts are wonderful at any time of the year. Especially since you are in your creative zone lately, make away! Have fun. I notice Martha's handmade gifts are usually (Martha Stewart) simple. Tis the gift to be simple, tis the gift to be free, as the holiday song goes. Simple, elegant, with a special touch. That's what I like!

I think that any gift that comes from the heart, rather than just from the wallet, is the right way to go. Whether it's handcrafted or bought, something that you really put thought into is valuable far beyond the worth of the object itself, for it carries in it a lifetime of love and care.

Hand made gifts are far better than anything 'bought'.

Go for it girl. Just go for it.

I've made calendars in past years for my family (my computer has to be one of my creative abilities) .. and they were well received. I just need to get my butt in gear and do that again

Yes. I vote for handmade gifts.

I'm a little late to the party, but I think that handmade gifts are wonderful - they can be customized to fit each recipient, which adds to the thoughtfulness.
