Blogging Awareness Day: Pet Safety

There is a growing consensus that dogs should be restrained in cars...just like people are. There are many reasons why...dogs that are loose in the car can be a distraction to the driver and unrestrained dogs can be injured in car accidents too.
The American Veterinary Medical Association is promoting seat belts for dogs. Their campaign is called "Please Show Some Restraint". There is also a website called "Paws to Click" which explains how to install a Bergan Harness and the best way to "fit" your dog. Typically the harnesses fit around your pet's body and then attach to the seat belts or anchors in your car.

There is quite a bit of useful information on this site....http://airplaneapprovedpetcarriers.com/tag/avma/
Snoozer Pet Products makes the preferred safety seats that I prefer for my girlz while riding in the car...AND they can also be used for beds while in the house...or while traveling!! My girlz had absolutely no trouble at all adjusting to their seats and they LOVE them! As soon as they see their seats being belted in the car...in they go!

This is a very important topic. I always ride in my crate in the car. Not only does it keep me safe, but it keeps me from running out the door if momma stops to run errands. Plus I like it. All cozy and smelling like me.

Dexter

We're glad you are safe while riding in vehicles girls! We wouldn't want you to be tossed around if something bad were to happen since you're so little like us!

Oh Yeah, I have the 'extra cab' in the truck all to myself, and I have a 'tether' that my car harness attatches to. I can walk back and forth in the cab, butts I am all safe and restrained.
It is also very important for your doggie to be restrained, because if heaven forbid you should get into an accident, emergency workers can easily get your dog out, and your dog won't escape and run into traffic.
Great topic!

Ruby

always important to be safe when in the car. My husbands son had a dog jump out of his jeep shortly after he got her. She ended up having to have her tail amputated

Momma saw a very enlightenig video about the speed and impact weight of a 20 lb pup being tossed about by a highway road collison and that was enough to convince her.

We are fortunate the van has floor hooks for tie-downs because otherwise it would be difficult to harness all six of us.

i'm glad more people are talking about this. i still get looks and comments or questions whenever people see yuki and rocket in their car seats. i never thought about not restraining them, but people that do have car seats for their dogs are sadly in the minority it seems.

My mom has a dog seatbelt for her pup, but mine just thrash, flail, and panic. I have this sort of dog hammock thing that clips in place and keeps them from just leaping up front or falling on the floor boards. It isn't ideal, but when I tried the doggie seat belts I thought someone was going to break a leg!
