Update as of Saturday Afternoon: Well....we are finally back with a zombie-like Zip. They gave him heavy duty anasthesia, took blood, and did xrays. He has a Ruptured Anterior (Cranial) Cruciate Ligament. Not that we are going to be doing anything differently...basically she said all we can do right now is load him up with pain killers and glucosamine. She's taking him off aspirin completely and giving him Previcox 227 mg plus the Tramadol every 12 hours. She said he won't be able to take his walks for 2-4 weeks and swimming would be good for him...if he wants. The challenge will be when I go back to my house with all the steps! Here at the cottage he will do ok because we're all on one level.
At the moment, he is laying in the back of the Jeep panting like a steam engine (he has a fever of 103). The vet said she feels the fever is from the pain he is in. He is clearly tired and in alot of pain.
Update as of Sunday Afternoon: I decided to check the Walmart $4 drugs to see if any of
Zippo's prescriptions were on it...I don't see them. What I did find is horrifying! Check this out!!

We all rely on our vets to tell us what is safe and what is not safe for our dogs. Now I am very apprehensive as to whether I should even give Zippo this stuff. The freakin bottle of Previcox cost $75.00 and they said he NEEDS it! They did tell me to wait 5-7 days after finishing aspirin to start him on it. He is still taking 100 mg of Tramadol. He's not moving more than two feet at a time. He moves from one spot in the yard to do his business, then he lays down for awhile...I think gaining strength...to move another couple of feet. He still hasn't come in the house. He has perked up some in terms of facial expressions and doesn't seem as drugged out today. He is eating, drinking, peeing and pooping normally. He is clearly in pain though. I believe his fever is down today as he doesn't feel as warm to me. His ears actually felt HOT yesterday.
What is your take on the Previcox situation? This stuff is making me crazy. I hate to give him drugs that could potentially kill him. My husband says we need to listen to the vet. I am still skeptical. So, am asking for your opinion...

Wow Jeanne I'm so sorry to hear this. If it was me, well if it was me I probably wouldn't even have done this so that's slightly embarrassing in itself. But I guess it's because our vet always gives us printouts of the things Mushu is getting. Now that you know what this drug can do I'd be calling the vet and telling them your concerns. They may be able to put your mind at ease. I am sure thinking about you right now!!

I'm going to spend the day on the phone tomorrow...both with the vet here at the cottage that actually prescribed these drugs, AND with our regular vet at home to find out her take on this whole thing. My vet at home is the one who prescribed the Tramadol to begin with ... along with Adult Aspirin. Now, the vets here at the cottage say...NO ASPIRIN and Zippo must wait five days before he can begin his new anti-inflammatory drugs. I am confused. I have a friend who is a vet tech. She told me to do what the vet said...the one who examined him and took the xrays knows his condition best. I just feel so bad for him as he is clearly very uncomfortable. He hasn't been in the house at all. I think he is afraid of my Pergo floors...they are slippery. The vet said he will come in when he is ready. Chloe is confused...she can't figure out WHAT is going on. I'm just all upset about this...
Still haven't found out what started all this, but I did just have a look at Previcox. Seems to be a lot of controversy and bad reports, something your vet should have mentioned. It just an anti-inflammatory, why can't you stick with asprin?
Glad they found out what it is and that it isn't something that is terminal. At least you will have him for a long time. As for the drugs...what Joy said.
dogs don't do well on aspirin; it makes our boscoe throw up.
bermuda, boscoe had the ACL surgery. you can read about it on my blog. (look in the sidebar for the dog-u-drama called "just like duante culpepper, boscoe blows out his knee."
the surgery was totally worth it.
it was tough for a couple of weeks, but he healed quickly (he was 10 when he had it) and was able to run and hike and frolic again.
