Your Opinion Please...Dog Expenses Tax Deductible??

I happened to run across an article that was rather interesting regarding whether or not we can claim our dogs as tax deductions...or at the very least ... some of their expenses.

For most people dogs aren’t legitimate deductions. Legislation slowly making its way through Congress (HR 3501 The HAPPY Act) may change this so people can deduct up to $3500 in pet medical expenses. But until that happens, there are still a few areas where dog expenses are tax deductible. People with guide dogs and certain service dogs may qualify. Rules are constantly changing, so I advise having a conversation with your tax preparer.

It's probably a rumor, but I just read where one woman said if you do not have a security system, you can claim one of your dogs as a security "system"!!

If your dogs can help you keep a little cash, score another point for our furry friends!!

What do you think???

I think my idiots would open the door for the burglar and then show him where I hide the good shit!

I think it SHOULD be legitimate - and I also think that I wouldn't want to deal with the penalty and the audit.

Security makes a lot of sense, though. Probably more likely to be accepted if your dog has been through special training and you don't have any other security system.

But thinking again - I don't think home security systems are deductible to begin with, are they? If your home is your place of biz maybe you can deduct one small percentage of the pooch upkeep...

(With same logic should also be able to deduct your cat for rodent control!)

I see no reason why we shouldn't be able to deduct our furry friends. After all, to some of us, they are our children! Barring that though, I wonder what it would take to have Chica considered a service dog????

Wouldn't push it, unless for a certified guard or health-aid dog.

My experience has been... because we have a rottweiler, we are not eligible with some companies for home owners insurance. I think I should be able to claim her as an alarm system - defense expense.
