A Little Neighborly Advice

My neighbors are celebrating FIFTY SEVEN years of marriage!!! That is 5 7 FOLKS!!!

That is actually longer than I have been alive!!! By five years...but STILL!

Long time, don't ya think???

So I asked Mr. L. just what advice he would give me for a long marriage.

He's a funny guy!

He said, "two words"...

"YES DEAR"!!!

Bwahahahahahaha!!!

I told him that wouldn't work in my house...it would have to be...

"YES SIR"!!!

So, while I was thinking on this topic....I ran across this post from Grandma's Briefs.

Now this could really open up Pandora's box for some REAL controversial conversation!!!

Let me tell you....we had some interesting dinner table conversation tonight!!!

Let me know what YOU think!!!

I do not think it is a good idea to be "joined at the hip".

I think it is a very good idea to maintain separate identities....have separate and unique hobbies!

The whole kitchen thing...TOTALLY agree with that....I prefer to cook in my kitchen ALONE...

Don't like people messin' with my stuff...

wait....

or is it don't want people to see ME messin' up stuff!

Ha!

No, it's never a good idea to be joined at the hip. My husband and I have things we do together and things we do apart. We've also spent a few days here and there away from each other over the years and I believe that's a good thing too... atleast for us it is!

hehehe....a great post!

When Mark wants to (REALLY) annoy me, he tells me "I'm all YOURS, joined at the hip"! ARGH!!!!!!!!

Grandma's article was interesting but the thought of managing two separate accounts would drive me batty. I guess Mark and I trust one another and there is never a problem as far as finances here.

Sometimes I feel the need for "space" away from the family, so I hide in the camper. That usually doesn't happen too often, but I am glad it is available. I usually just go out there to avoid the noise!

Love it! Oh and we're the same age girl! hahaha I totally agree on your points. My husband works second shift, 2-10 and I work 8-4:30. It's great for us cause we still see each other before and after work a little but we have our individual time as well. ~Jeanne

Great post.!!

Bob and I get along so well...
maybe 4 arguments in 14 years...
because he works out of town during the week and he absolutely refuses
to argue when he is home.

Funny.

I'm no expert on long marriages, having jetisoned my own after 21 years.

Agree that separate interests are important - but it's good that they be shared at the level of "interesting" to the partner. Nothing worse than needing to listen patiently to a long, excited diatribe on something that you find boring. And if it's a daily occurrence? Dangerous indeed.

My x learned to cook from me and became quite good. I enjoyed working with him in the kitchen. It was a minuet - we each took separate responsibilities for a particular meal and danced past and around each other quite efficiently. It was a nice time to chat companionably and de-stress from the day. If we'd have taken that ritual seriously and given it priority in our life, we might have stayed together. But that's crystal-ball stuff, who knows. What I do know is that finding time to be together in a regular way and chat is critical for me. Otherwise those separate interests grow you apart.

My parents were married for 57 years. My dad passed away quite suddenly 2 years ago. When dad itched, mom scratched. My grandparents were married for 69 years when my grandpa died. I guess at 34 yrs, we are still newlyweds! And yes get out of my kitchen. Or do exactly as I tell you to.

We had separate bank accounts while I was working - and had our specific responsibilities to make sure things got paid. Of course I'm not really working now -- makes that harder to do.

We have separate interests, and combined interests. Neither of us expect 100% devotion. I don't think we get jealous -- at least I don't think he does. I never do. I get mad, though. That is a bad thing... I think we would be perfect if I could just not lose my temper now and then.

I think it's great to be married that long! And there is no formula for success....they just have to do whatever works for them....we are all different....I'm just sayin'....

I think, people are different. We are eighteen years married and we always had an agreement- I am at home for houseworking and be a mother- my husband is looking for the money. We are happy with it. I have nobody in the kitchen ;-) out of my wonderful daughter- she likes it to helpe me ;-)) . Maybe it´s oldfashionded- but it works... I like it- and we never say to each other, what we have to do... everyone has its own part of our familylife...
When we met- he gave me a birthdaycard - for the next 89 years together :-) that´s romance...
Enjoy your day- Ines
