Opinions Please!

I'm sure most of you remember the post I did on Canidae back in February...you can read it here.

Well, I opened my mail tonight to find that Diamond has recalled many of their pet foods...you can read about them here.  Don't know why, but my eyes happened to catch one of the comments below the article stating that CANIDAE was being recalled.  WHAT?????  So, I went immediately to their website to read this!!  Are you kidding me???

I am so angry about this I could just scream.  My husband and I constantly have this battle about feeding the dogs good quality kibble.  My take is I can cook my own chicken or beef, or tuna or whatever...and give them quality kibble that will give them the necessary vitamins and nutrients that they need.  When he sees this recall, I think he is going to flip out too!!

Honestly, what concerns me especially this time is that the time that Canidae provided me with the voucher for the food to write the review and the timeframe of the "possibly" contaminated food is the same!!  Fortunately the girlz seem ok and I am now feeding them another brand, but this just really upsets me.

Don't you get crazy with all these recalls??  My husband says we should just start giving them OUR food.

What do you think????

That's crazy! I wouldn't be able to stay on top of making FInn's food all the time. Once in a while if I can get the energy, but so far, we haven't seen anything we've given her get recalled.

For several years I have made all of Teas' food... a chicken (or burger )
rice mixture.... burger and rice was suggested by the Vet when she had some issues with processed food. Her doggie
treats are MILKBONE.. hope they don't do a recall....

You know how I feel. I have home cooked for 12 yrs now, I do no trust an industry that lies, hides evidence and discounts deaths as "acceptable losses".... nuff said.

Very frustrating and unnerving for sure. Between all the treats from China being questioned and now this, it is really hard to know what to do. We are currently eating a kibble from California Natural, but who knows which company will be next? Very scary.

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Hi Y'all,

Stoppin' to say "hello" and see how y'all are doing.

Seems like Canidae double crossed you. Just a dogs point of view.

Y'all come by now,

Well, I would be angry as well about this, Jeanne. And even more angry after I wrote a sponsored post about this brand.

Sooooo glad to hear that the girlz are okay!

" My husband says we should just start giving them OUR food."

My mother feels the same way and does feed her dog people food only.

I once had a vet tell me to only feed my cats people food (chicken, fish, etc.) because it was much healthier than cat food.

Have a great weekend, dear lady!

We have always gone with Eukanuba.. fortunately I don't think it's made by Diamond. I'm not a fan of most class action law suits, but in this case, I think Diamond should have to pay all of the vet bills incurred and a certain amount of damages to those who lose a pet due to Salmonella poisoning. GRRRRR.

do NOT give them people food .. it causes pancreatitis ... check out Spots Stew - they have wet and dry foods that are as close of human as possible and Ellen Degeneris is involved .. a good food

Hi there, Hunter has been on Pedigree and so I'm continuing on that and then slowly will add in Blue kibble so that we can transition him to a good quality natural food without corn or wheat. Have you heard of this brand? Interesting side note, I put a leash on him today and he hated it-of course only when I used it to bring him to me. Guess he will get used to it.
Thanks for sharing about this food though. Hopefully within a few days, he will be comfortable with us.
Hugs, Noreen & Hunter

I've been really happy with Wee Bit Solid Gold food, not sure of any recalls in the past but Betty loves it and she had allergy problems before...she likes anything and everything when it comes to food though

Heck, it's hard to know what to believe lately. My girls seem to be doing fine on Blue Buffalo. That's all they have had for years. I don't know much about anything else. Did I tell you it's Meeka's birthday and I have posted lots of cute pictures of her?

I understand the frustration. They also recalled Natural Balance. I don't feed that to the dogs but did the cats.

Home-cooked food can be a huge health builder. Since it has more natural moisture, quality ingredients you control and love, BUT a poorly formulated home-cooked recipe can be more dangerous than a poor quality commercial food. Dogs have a nutritional need for some things a cooked diet can not naturally provide. Every recall, I see these yahoo groups pop up claiming their recipes for home made dog food are "healthy" and the sad fact is that many have no idea what their dogs actually need. If you are going to cook at home, I always recommend consulting with a canine nutrtionist first or using a site like BalanceIt.com, so that you know what vitamins and minerals need to be added.

Home cooked diets should also be varied when it comes to protein source and veggie source, like a human diet would be. When done correctly, there isn't a risk of pancratitis and it can be quite good for them. If you want to bark about it more, just Facebook me. I can share some more ideas on how to do it right, so that it gives the girls everything they need.

My Pack eats Innova - they love it in fact- I do make them a home cooked meal from time to time from a wonderful dog food cookbook called Barker's Grub (Rudy Edalati) & they enjoy vanilla yogurt & ice cream, baby carrots, apples among other things. Also fish!! Alaska is famous for fresh wild salmon & they LOVE it!!
