Don't Melt Your Mobile Device: Tips to Keep Electronics COOL This Summer from Gazelle

Not only is the temperature rising, so is the amount of essentials for summer time fun, from beach gear to must-haves for road trips. With the endless list of items to haul,  it is pretty easy to forget your smartphone or tablet locked in your car and before you know it... it has melted onto the backseat!!   Gazelle, the nation's leading trading site for used electronics, has put together some tips to keep that FABULOUS mobile device of yours from melting this summer!!

Listen UP!  What the heat does to your phone...

Phones, tablets, and laptops left out in the heat can all be impacted by extreme temperatures. The internal components of your phone or electronic device will become damaged, causing potential data loss, dead batteries, and in some cases the lithium battery can leak, expand or explode!!   Luckily, a large portion of phones manufactured today have a warning screen to let you know before this happens.

So...Here are a few pointers on how to keep your phone cool in the summer sun!

If you really don't want to see that WARNING SCREEN...here are a couple of tips to ensure the safety of your electronic device!
  1. Avoid leaving your device in your car. Temperatures rise much faster on the inside of a closed up car. Make sure your devices are not left behind, and don’t forget about your GPS!
  2. Turn your device off, or turn off apps such as Bluetooth, WiFi, or LTE. iPhones are programmed to do some of this when the initial warning screen comes on. However, if you need your device on and the temperature is rising, closing any unnecessary programs will let the battery relax a little, and not heat up quite so fast.
  3. Keep your devices separate. Carrying around your iPad, iPhone, and GPS in your bag? Keeping them all together is bound to conduct more heat than just your phone. Try to keep them as separate as possible to allow maximum air flow to each device.
  4. Don’t cool it too fast. If your phone overheats, your initial reaction is going to be to rush it to the coldest place you can find. But WAIT!!  Rushing the cooling process can cause condensation to get trapped on the inside of the devices and possibly even water damage.

Preventative products and accessories
There are very limited temperature resistant cases out there. Even the Otterbox, that makes cases that protect your phone from just about everything, DOES NOT have a heat resistant option!!

There is a company called Salt that makes the first thermal-protective cases for Apple products that are resilient to extreme heat AND cold. Their stylish thermal technology was inspired by NASA and designed to withstand the heat of a launch, and the freezing temps of outer space. Hopefully they will begin making cases for all of our devices SOON!

When the going gets hot
If your device does overheat make sure you do not touch it. It can burn you. Try following the steps above to cool it down. If the battery does leak, you will begin to notice corrosion coming out of the battery compartment, or on the battery itself inside the compartment. The bad news is after battery leakage occurs, it’s difficult to ensure no other part of your phone is damaged. The acid probably already wreaked havoc on your phone’s components.

If your device has already been torched...
Rather than scrap your toasted smartphone, check out Gazelle!!

Gazelle is a website that buys used electronics for cash...even if they are damaged!!   More than 600,000 consumers have used Gazelle to sell nearly one million gadgets. Gazelle offers trade-ins for everything from smartphones to laptops to ereaders!!   Gazelle cannot return your memory, but they CAN give another life to your used iPhone by refurbishing it for another buyer, keeping it out of the landfill and giving you CASH in return. Better for you, better for the environment, better for everyone
