In Preparation for the Upcoming Fireworks Celebrations...

FIVE RECOMMENDATIONS
to help keep your dog safe during 4th of July festivities

1. LEAVE AT HOME!
Do NOT take your pet to fireworks displays. Regretful people will tell you that they thought their dog would be fine ... and now their precious dog is no longer with them. Don't be sorry, be safe!

2. KEEP INSIDE EXCEPT TO POTTY:
Keep your dog inside the house.... in an interior room or basement with windows closed & TV, radio or soft music on to muffle outside sounds. Help them to feel safe however you can by playing with him/her, doing some relaxed massage, or distracting with a favorite toy.

3. DO NOT REINFORCE FEARS:
Do NOT say "Oh (name), it's okay ...." as this may reinforce it's anxiety. Be calm yourself, be nonchalant ...... model relaxation and your dog will pick up on it.

4. SNUG COLLAR, IDENTIFICATION, MICROCHIP:
Be very sure that your dog has full identification collar or harness on AND that it is snug enough that s/he cannot slip it over it's head. Frightened dogs are not rational when they are seriously scared ... and would likely not come when called. Microchipping is also an excellent way to try to prevent your dog not being returned to you if lost.

5. TREATING ANXIETY:
If you know your dog is hyper-anxious, try using something like Rescue Remedy to take the edge off. If your dog is seriously anxious, you might wish to discuss a light sedative for your dog during fireworks festivities.

6. LOST SITUATION: Should your dog accidentally bolt from you and become lost, Quickly follow the "Lost Dog" steps provided on the Bichon Frise Information Station.

Good Luck, have fun, but leave Fido at home!

All great advise! I, Goose, am not bothered by all the loudness this day brings. But still we do follow these rules.

We had a big fireworks session around here last night, but we just slept through it. We're young and nothing much fazes us so far.

Hi Jeanne, Great post!!!! All of our previous dogs have been fearful of fireworks and we always had to sedate them. I am thankful that as of now, Hunter doesn't seem to react to them or thunder. We will have our daughter's Bichon, Lily for the 4th too; don't think she reacts but one never knows.
Hugs to you today.

Good advice! Luckily me and Stanley aren't scared of fireworks (so far). We had some big ones last week for another celebration and we didn't even blink an eye. But we know lots of dogs HATE them!

Those are excellent tips!! I worry abouts the pups that don't like the booms.
Stay safe!

What a great reminder to me: get the flag out!! Thankfully our neighbors have not begun fireworks... yet. When they do it is like WWIII and we hunker down with our dogs :-)

Great advice. We're able to watch fireworks from our back yard but even if we went somewhere would never take Duke with us. He has however been outside when we've watched local displays and doesn't seem to be bothered by the noise.

Great tips Jeanne! Up until a few years ago I never had to worry about fireworks and the dogs but then Sherman became very nervous about them so since then we have to be conscious that he is uneasy at this time of the year!
