Coconut Oil...Healthy for You AND for your Pet!!

Someone asked me just the other day how did my girls like coconut oil.  Well...let me tell you, they absolutely LOVE the taste of coconut oil...and if I forgot to put it in their food, they probably would not even eat!  THAT is how much they have come to love it!!  I put just about a half of a teaspoon mixed in with their meal.  Both of them are quite happy to lick the spoon!!

Coconut oil can have many so many health benefits if you feed it regularly to your dog– for their skin, digestive and immune systems, metabolic function, even their bone and brain health! Here are the top 10 reasons to add coconut oil to your dog’s diet:

1. Coconut oil improves overall skin health, and clears up skin conditions such as eczema, flea allergies, contact dermatitis, and itchy skin.

2. Incredibly emollient, coconut oil helps moisturize the dryest K9 skin and makes a dog’s coat gleam with health – whether you add it to her diet, her shampoo, or both!

3. Applied topically to the skin, coconut oil  promotes the healing of cuts, wounds, hot spots, bites, and stings.

4. The antibacterial and antifungal properties of coconut oil help reduce doggy odor, and its pleasantly tropical aroma imparts a delightful scent to a dog’s skin and coat.

5. Coconut oil prevents and treats yeast infections, including candida. Its antiviral agents also help dogs recover quickly from kennel cough.

6. Digestion and nutrient absorption are improved by the addition of coconut oil to a dog’s diet. It can, however, cause stool to loosen; if that happens, just add a few spoonfuls of canned pumpkin to your dog’s diet (go here for more stool-firming tips).

7. Coconut oil reduces – and sometimes eliminates – doggy breath. Some dog lovers even brush their pets’ teeth with the stuff! Which makes sense, as dogs love the taste of coconut oil, and that makes the chore less arduous for brusher and brushee.

8. Like cinnamon, coconut oil helps prevent diabetes by regulating and balancing insulin. It also promotes normal thyroid function, and helps prevent infection and heart disease.

9. Helping to reduce weight and increase energy, coconut oil also promotes mobility in dogs with arthritis and other joint issues.

10. Again like cinnamon, coconut oil is excellent for brain health; it’s being used to stave off dementia in humans, and it’s a must to keep senior dogs’ minds from becoming cloudy.

Our thanks to Dogster for this very important health info!!

Jeanne, you are absolutely right about all the health benefits to coconut oil! A friend of mine in Florida told me about it several years ago because she had such great results. So I bought a jar and have been using it ever since. I mainly use it on my skin and hair. GREAT stuff!

Thanks for sharing! And I love the photo collage of you and the girlz!

Happy Tuesday, my friend!

X to you and the girlz

I've been hoarding my coconut oil, since it's so pricey and I use it cor my coffee every morning, but I've recently found it pretty cheap at Aldi. I'm convinced. The dogs are getting some next meal. Thanks!

We love coconut oil and mostly use it topically. Mom has a poison ivy rash and you just gave her an idea! Thanks, girls!

I wish I would have known about that years ago when I had my chocolate labs. They both had flea allergies really bad and could have benefited from this

Guess where I found it Flea? I found a huge tub of it at BJ's Wholesale Club. It works very well and it is much less expensive than what I was paying for it!

It really IS Jenna...I just recently discovered I can rub it on the girls FUR too!! What an awesome idea!!

Wow! I never thought to use it as hair conditioner...awesome idea! It seems as if we can use coconut oil ALL OVER our bodies, our hair, we can ingest it...it is like a MIRACLE! :) Happy Wednesday to you Ron!!

I started out with just a tiny little dab and slowly increased it. They have had no problems or ill effects from it...and I did speak with my vet about it so she is aware of what I give the girls...Maybe for the size of your two...you could probably give them about 3 times what I give mine...but your vet would definitely know!

I switch it up and give the girls coconut oil for awhile...then I switch them back to the Vermont Naturals Fish Oil for a couple weeks...then back to the coconut oil. I figure, I don't like to eat the same thing all the time....so I may as well vary their diet too!! Let me know if Easy likes it! I haven't heard of a dog yet that doesn't like the taste!!

That's PAWSOME! We don't have a BJs, but I'm guessing SAMs probably has it cheaper. Thanks!

Wow! I had no idea that it was good for dogs. I have two big containers of it that I got at Costco, which I use for my hair and for making scrubs. I'll have to give it a try. Thanks for the tip!

I will have to check that out....we have a Sam's Club membership here...but I haven't looked for it. If I find it, I will let you know!!

Our crew loves coconut oil too! I give them a spoonful every other day or so. We use it topically too. I use it as a moisturizer myself. I also recently used it on some sore spots on our cat, and they're healing well now!
