Six Reasons You Might Need an Electric Dog Fence

Keeping your dog safe is one of your biggest priorities. That’s why you feed them healthy food, take them to the vet, walk them regularly, and keep them on a leash. It’s why you do whatever it takes to ensure they’re protected from danger, even if it means confining them to a smaller area than they’d like. All dogs have the desire to roam and explore, but it’s simply not safe for them to be allowed to venture off your property alone. A fence provides them with the best of both worlds - the ability to move freely while also remaining in a secure space.

There are two types of fencing systems that you can choose from for your property: a traditional fence and an electric fence. There’s often a stigma attached to electric dog fences, and some people consider them to be poor alternatives to traditional fencing. However, when you look deeper and learn more about wired fences, you’ll see that there are several instances in which they are actually better than traditional fences. The truth is that an e-collar will not harm your dog, and, as in the cases outlined below, you and your dog may actually benefit from one.

You Have a Stubborn Dog

An electronic dog fence can be used with just about any type of dog. For stubborn, difficult-to-contain dogs, an electric fence may be necessary. In particular, dogs that love to dig, like terriers, and dogs that love to chase, like hunting dogs, do better with electric fences. Dogs can dig under, break through, or jump over traditional fences. Despite their persistence, dogs cannot escape the perimeter of an electric fence. Dogs that are especially aggressive and determined to escape also tend to do better with an electric fence. Keeping your dog safe in your yard will also protect you from the liability you’d face if your aggressive dog were to escape and injure someone else or their pet. For the most stubborn dogs who regularly break free from a traditional fence, a wired dog fence can be added as an additional barrier.

You Have a Low Budget

Homes, yards, and dogs are all expensive to care for, and saving money is always nice. However, when it comes to the safety of your dog, you certainly don’t want to cut corners. Traditional fences can cost thousands of dollars to install and maintain. On the other hand, an electric dog fence can cost as little as $300 when you install it on your own. A do-it-yourself wired perimeter can be completed in one short weekend by people of all skill levels. Underground dog fences are also much less prone to damage, so maintenance costs over the years will be minimal when compared to traditional fences. A low budget does not have to prevent you from enclosing your yard and making it safe for your dog.

You Have Lots of Acres

For large properties like farms and ranches, there’s rarely a better option than an electric fence for dogs. Some models of electric fences can enclose more than 20 acres at a time. The cost and effort required to enclose that much land with traditional fences is astronomical. Once you’ve purchased an electric fence system, you can get additional wire for very little money. Regular fences, however, are not as discounted for purchasing so many sections at once. Leveling and clearing thousands of feet of land for a traditional fence is also a much bigger undertaking than simply running a wire around a large perimeter. The larger the area is that you want to enclose, the more time and money you’ll save by getting an electric fence.

You Have a Great View

Traditional fences aren’t only a big investment; they’re also a big change to your property. A traditional fence will change the look and feel of your land. If you have certain aesthetics that you want to preserve, an invisible fence is a great choice. An electric fence will not get in the way of a great view. If your home borders a golf course, mountain range, or lake, for example, an underground dog fence will keep your landscape pristine.

You Have a Uniquely Shaped Yard

One of the great things about electric dog fences is that they can fit any yard. Traditional fences do best when the area they need to enclose is all straight lines and right angles. Enclosing a circular or uniquely shaped yard is a challenge with a traditional fence. The best wireless dog fence, however, can be easily formed to fit any shape. When you install your own wired fence, you can maneuver it however you’d like. You can even change the shape of your dog’s safe zone with relative ease. Traditional fences cannot be molded or moved so fluidly.

You Have an Aversion to Gates

Traditional fences must have at least one gate, and this can create problems for some people. If you want to limit your dog’s movement in your yard without limiting your own, an electric fence is a great option. For example, it can be difficult to move farm machinery, lawn mowers, and other large items through gates. If you regularly need to cross over the boundary you’ve set for your dog, an electric fence may make that easier for you. Some people are also concerned about the reliability of traditional fences with gates. With an electric fence, you don’t have to worry that someone has forgotten to shut or lock the gate, creating the chance for your dog to run away. Invisible dog fences keep your dog inside, period. As long as your dog is wearing their e-collar, they are safe inside the bounds you’ve intended for them.

Choosing between a traditional fence and an electric fence is an important decision. All yards and dogs are different, so no single choice is right for everyone. What matters most is that your dog is safe within your property line. Before you choose a fencing system, carefully evaluate your situation and consider whether or not an electric dog fence would be beneficial for you.

Here is a recipe for Chicken Jerky...

• 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breast tenders. Soft frozen makes them easier to slice
• 1/4 cup vegetable oil
Juice from one lemon
2 Tablespoons Honey
Your choice of dog-friendly seasonings: parsley, rosemary, sage (preferably fresh and chopped very fine)

Directions

• Rinse the chicken breasts and remove any fat, which slows down the dehydrating process and will shorten the jerky’s shelf life. Fat may also go rancid quickly in dehydrator.

• Slice the chicken into strips about 1/4- to 1/8-inch thick; slicing with the grain. This will make the treats chewier!

Coat the strips with oil, lemon juice, honey and seasonings. Put in Ziploc bag and let marinate overnight.

• Place the strips on the dehydrator tray, spacing them evenly; make sure they do not touch. The drying process depends on adequate airflow between the strips.
