Happy Valentines Day!

I hope you all have a very Happy Valentines Day!

Tomorrow morning I am scheduled for Oral Surgery and several extractions.  Sorry I have not been around much lately.  I have not been able to concentrate very much.

I would really appreciate your thoughts and prayers.

Thanksđź’•

Happy Valentine's Day!!

As you all know, I enjoy holidays...ALOT!!

I celebrate them ALL in every way I can!!

As the years go by, Valentine's Day does not have the same....uh....punch...that it used to!!

When my husband and I first started dating, we used to do it up big time. Every single year we would go to Niagara Falls, Canada to celebrate Valentine's Day. In a very BIG way!! Flowers, candles, chocolate, gifts, gorgeous hotel with jacuzzi...overlooking the magnificent Niagara Falls. We did that for several years. Then, we switched to Key West vacations in April and smaller Valentine's Day celebrations.

One year, my husband (boyfriend at the time) put together a DVD of lots of our happy & special times together. One year he spray painted a HUGE heart out in the snow, outlined with sparklers that said I love you! One year he actually dressed up AS a HEART....oh, I better not describe that whole scene to you. But you get the idea!!

Those were the days, my friends...now that we've been married forever  24 years, we go a little bit easier on the celebrating!

In case anyone is wondering, YES, the girls do get special treats and gourmet dinners!

Hope you all have a SUPER HAPPY Valentine's Day!!!

My Furry Valentines!

It is time to start thinking about what we are going to feed our Furry Valentine's this year!  I have found a great recipe that I believe the girls will enjoy!

Mini Heart Dog Cakes

Ingredients:

For the cake:
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/3 cup butter (or 1/4 cup vegetable oil)
  • 1/4 cup all-natural peanut butter
  • 1 cup shredded carrots
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons all-natural honey
  • 1/2 cup low-fat buttermilk
For the frosting:
  • 8 ounces of low-fat cream cheese
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees FSpray a mini heart cake pan with non-stick cooking spray and set it aside.
  2. Mix the flour and baking soda. Add the peanut butter, vanilla, honey and oil/butter and stir. Add the buttermilk, 1/4 cup at a time. Stir in carrots.
  3. Spoon the mixture into the mini heart cavities, filling each one three-quarters full. Bake for at least 25 minutes or until an inserted toothpick comes out clean. Let cool completely.
  4. While the cakes cook, prepare frosting by beating the cream cheese, vanilla and cinnamon together. Once the cakes have cooled, frost. Drizzle melted peanut butter on top or top with additional shredded carrots.

Happy Valentine's Day! And a Word of Caution...

Wishing you and yours a very Happy Valentine's Day!

A few reminders so that we can all relax and have a good time together!!

Valentine’s Day can be as much fun for pets as it is for humans if dangerous foods, flora and other items are kept out of paws’ reach. Each year poison control experts see a rise in cases around February 14, many involving chocolate and lilies, a flower that’s potentially fatal to cats. So please heed the experts’ advice — don’t leave the goodies lying around on Valentine’s Day.

Pet-Safe Bouquets
Many pet owners are still unaware that all species of lily are potentially fatal to cats. When sending a floral arrangement, specify that it contain no lilies if the recipient has a cat — and when receiving an arrangement, sift through and remove all dangerous flora. If your pet is suffering from symptoms such as stomach upset, vomiting or diarrhea, he may have ingested an offending flower or plant. Use online toxic and nontoxic plant libraries as visual guides of what and what not should be in your bouquets.

Forbidden Chocolate
Seasoned pet lovers know the potentially life-threatening dangers of chocolate, including baker’s, semi sweet, milk and dark. In darker chocolates, methylxanthines— caffeine-like stimulants that affect gastrointestinal, neurologic and cardiac function—can cause vomiting/diarrhea, hyperactivity, seizures and an abnormally elevated heart rate. The high-fat content in lighter chocolates can potentially lead to a life-threatening inflammation of the pancreas. Go ahead and indulge, but don’t leave chocolate out for chowhounds to find.

Careful with Cocktails
Spilled wine, half a glass of champagne, some leftover liquor are nothing to cry over until a curious pet laps them up. Because animals are smaller than humans, a little bit of alcohol can do a lot of harm, causing vomiting, diarrhea, lack of coordination, central nervous system depression, tremors, difficulty breathing, metabolic disturbances and even coma. Potentially fatal respiratory failure can also occur if a large enough amount is ingested.

Life Is Sweet
So don’t let pets near treats sweetened with xylitol. If ingested, gum, candy and other treats that include this sweetener can result in a sudden drop in blood sugar known as hypoglycemia. This can cause your pet to suffer depression, loss of coordination and seizures.

Every Rose Has Its Thorn
Don’t let pets near roses or other thorny stemmed flowers. Biting, stepping on or swallowing their sharp, woody spines can cause serious infection if a puncture occurs. “It’s all too easy for pets to step on thorns that fall to the ground as a flower arrangement is being created,” says Dr. Louise Murray, Director of Medicine for the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital. De-thorn your roses far away from pets.

Playing with Fire
It’s nice to set your evening a-glow with candlelight, but put out the fire when you leave the room. Pawing kittens and nosy pooches can burn themselves or cause a fire by knocking over unattended candles.

Wrap it Up
Gather up tape, ribbons, bows, wrapping paper, cellophane and balloons after presents have been opened — if swallowed, these long, stringy and “fun-to-chew” items can get lodged in your pet’s throat or digestive tract, causing her to choke or vomit.

The Furry Gift of Life?
Giving a cuddly puppy or kitten may seem a fitting Valentine’s Day gift — however, returning a pet you hadn’t planned on is anything but romantic. Companion animals bring with them a lifelong commitment, and choosing a pet for someone else doesn’t always turn out right. Consider a gift certificate for a local shelter!

Tasty Tuesday: The Early Valentine's Edition

If you have been reading my blog for awhile, each year I make this addictive Valentine's Chex Mix snack!! Check it out!!!

4 1/2 cups Rice Chex cereal

1/2 cup white vanilla baking chips

1/4 cup peanut butter

2 tablespoons butter or margarine

1/3 cup powdered sugar

1/4 cup red, white and pink candy-coated chocolate candies

2 tablespoons red or pink sprinkles

* Place cereal in medium bowl. In small microwavable bowl, microwave vanilla chips, peanut butter and butter uncovered on High 1 minute to 1 minute 30 seconds, stirring every 30 seconds, until melted and smooth.

* Pour peanut butter mixture over cereal, stirring until evenly coated.

* Place 1/2 of the cereal mixture in 1-gallon food-storage plastic bag. Add powdered sugar. Seal bag; shake until well coated. Spread on waxed paper or foil; cool about 15 minutes. (I find it takes closer to an hour...so it's not so sticky!)

~Here's a tip though...you may have to make a double batch if you are sampling as you go along!!
