Tips for Valentine's Week....For our Furry Friends

Valentine’s Day can be as much fun for pets as it is for humans if dangerous foods, flora and other items are kept out of paws’ reach. Each year poison control experts see a rise in cases around February 14, many involving chocolate and lilies, a flower that’s potentially fatal to cats. So please heed the experts’ advice — don’t leave the goodies lying around on Valentine’s Day.

Pet-Safe Bouquets
Many pet owners are still unaware that all species of lily are potentially fatal to cats. When sending a floral arrangement, specify that it contain no lilies if the recipient has a cat — and when receiving an arrangement, sift through and remove all dangerous flora. If your pet is suffering from symptoms such as stomach upset, vomiting or diarrhea, he may have ingested an offending flower or plant. Use online toxic and nontoxic plant libraries as visual guides of what and what not should be in your bouquets.

Forbidden Chocolate
Seasoned pet lovers know the potentially life-threatening dangers of chocolate, including baker’s, semi sweet, milk and dark. In darker chocolates, methylxanthines— caffeine-like stimulants that affect gastrointestinal, neurologic and cardiac function—can cause vomiting/diarrhea, hyperactivity, seizures and an abnormally elevated heart rate. The high-fat content in lighter chocolates can potentially lead to a life-threatening inflammation of the pancreas. Go ahead and indulge, but don’t leave chocolate out for chowhounds to find.

Careful with Cocktails
Spilled wine, half a glass of champagne, some leftover liquor are nothing to cry over until a curious pet laps them up. Because animals are smaller than humans, a little bit of alcohol can do a lot of harm, causing vomiting, diarrhea, lack of coordination, central nervous system depression, tremors, difficulty breathing, metabolic disturbances and even coma. Potentially fatal respiratory failure can also occur if a large enough amount is ingested.

Life Is Sweet
So don’t let pets near treats sweetened with xylitol. If ingested, gum, candy and other treats that include this sweetener can result in a sudden drop in blood sugar known as hypoglycemia. This can cause your pet to suffer depression, loss of coordination and seizures.

Every Rose Has Its Thorn
Don’t let pets near roses or other thorny stemmed flowers. Biting, stepping on or swallowing their sharp, woody spines can cause serious infection if a puncture occurs. “It’s all too easy for pets to step on thorns that fall to the ground as a flower arrangement is being created,” says Dr. Louise Murray, Director of Medicine for the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital. De-thorn your roses far away from pets.

Playing with Fire
It’s nice to set your evening a-glow with candlelight, but put out the fire when you leave the room. Pawing kittens and nosy pooches can burn themselves or cause a fire by knocking over unattended candles.

Wrap it Up
Gather up tape, ribbons, bows, wrapping paper, cellophane and balloons after presents have been opened — if swallowed, these long, stringy and “fun-to-chew” items can get lodged in your pet’s throat or digestive tract, causing her to choke or vomit.

The Furry Gift of Life?
Giving a cuddly puppy or kitten may seem a fitting Valentine’s Day gift — however, returning a pet you hadn’t planned on is anything but romantic. Companion animals bring with them a lifelong commitment, and choosing a pet for someone else doesn’t always turn out right. Consider a gift certificate for a local shelter!

Inspiration for the Day

There are times when it is hard to believe in the future, when we are temporarily just not brave enough. When this happens, concentrate on the present. Cultivate le petit bonheur (the little happiness) until courage returns. Look forward to the beauty of the next moment, the next hour, the promise of a good meal, sleep, a book, a movie, the likelihood that tonight the stars will shine and tomorrow the sun will shine. Sink roots into the present until the strength grows to think about tomorrow.

The Q-Tip Girls Go To Pampered Pooch!

Posted by Picasa

My stepson calls my girls "QTips" hence the title! We were all up early today, which is extremely unusual for us!! They knew something was up when I started moving their carseats from the RV into my Jeep. Got everybody walked and took bathroom breaks and away we went. The ride there was a little stressful as they pretty much knew that they were going to be left at the groomers. They do NOT like to be away from me AT ALL. So, once I dropped them off, I went over to the mall which is only about five minutes away. Spent a couple of hours researching at Borders. I could live at Borders....really I could!! I simply never, ever tire of reading whatever I can get my hands on!! Read an interesting article in the new Windows Vista magazine and checked out a couple of the new Bestsellers. Oh, and found a cute pink mousepad that matches my laptop & mouse!

Still learning a little bit day by day once we got the new hard drive installed. So far, so good, KNOCK ON WOOD!! I am absolutely amazed at how powerful Vista is. There are many things to learn!! Of course, I also loaded a huge new Scrapbooking Program which I am trying to learn at the same time...

Oh yeah....got off track for a minute... When I picked the girls up they were SO EXCITED!! They did not want to stop and go to the bathroom or anything. They just wanted IN the Jeep. So, snapped a few pics and off we went. It is kind of a long drive home...about 45 minutes. Had the sunroof wide open and we all enjoyed the nice fall day! They slept most of the way home. Zippo was so happy to see us when we got home that HE actually peed in the hall from excitement!! He is so not used to being by himself anymore. I think the poor guy thought we were abandoning him.

They all went to sleep early and I am up blogging...night all...will check in tomorrow!!! And tomorrow I am off to pick up my copy of the new S*x And The City DVD! I loved that movie and cannot wait to see it again!!

Lady's OK!

Spent an hour with the vet and after much examination from head to toe....LadyBug has a sprained back. She apparently jumped off the couch or bed and landed wrong. So she is on "bedrest" and 1/2 of a children's aspirin at bedtime. It is NOT easy to keep her quiet and she is not happy in a crate, so I'm doing my best to keep her relatively immobile...not an easy task! I'm just so happy that she is ok!

May you have...

May you have enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials to make you strong, enough sorrow to keep you human, enough hope to make you happy.

The Cat Up The Tree

It was an ordinary afternoon and we were out for our midafternoon stroll. Then. Chloe saw it. Or felt it. Under the Deck. It was the CAT. The CAT is not allowed to BE under the deck. We do not know who this cat belongs to as it doesn't belong to any of my neighbors. But it likes to hang out at my house. Under the deck. It took three milliseconds for Chloe to have that CAT UP THAT TREE. Then it was a game of watch the cat freak out because he was in the tree. And. Could not get down. So we left him up there. The next morning he was gone. Our assumption is that the cat got down all by himself and will probably be under the deck again. Tomorrow. So we can play THAT game all over again. As it is one of my guys' favorite games!! Hope Y'all have a nice weekend!!

Oh! I should apologize for the quality of these photos!!! My camera was in the house, so had to use my cell phone. That's why the pics are so....great!

It IS That Time Again...

There's just something about warm temps that makes everybody want to go out for ice cream!! Our seasonal places around here don't usually open til mid-May to Memorial Day. This year...we've already got a couple that opened this week. My daughter, Meish, and her boyfriend, Jonathan, came over with their Westie, Beemer to play with Lady. Beemer actually had the pleasure of riding with us for 15 hours the other day in the car so the two of them already knew each other. After we let them run around for awhile, we headed out to Abbott's. Chloe and Zippo stayed home with Dingo bones with my husband...he was watching Ultimate Fighting. The kids and I took Beemer and Lady out for ice cream. A grand time was had by all. ~Bopping myself in the head....WHY didn't I take any pics????

Great Weather & other stuff...

Wow! Couldn't believe the thermometer actually hit 78 degrees today....this is totally unheard of here in Northern NY!! Not complaining, it's just such a radical change. Spent a portion of the afternoon out running the dogs around in the yard...trying to get them accustomed to each other. Things are going along pretty well in that department....although Chloe has always been the alpha female, and now I have a little one trying to CHANGE that. Not so good. Zippo just goes with the flow. We're trying to get them all ready for our road trip next week. The RV's maiden voyage will take place next week. Not a long trip, just a couple of hours. But we are starting out with baby steps!! It's a whole different feel than riding in a car actually. I have to remember NOT to stand up and face the back when my husband is putting is foot on the gas and lurching forward! Nice face plant....ALMOST through the glass door of the shower. I know, I know, I should be sitting down. Actually, I should be belted in! I've ordered Lady's carseat and it should be arriving on Tuesday, so the two little ones will be seated next to each other at the booth table. I'm supposed to be in the copilot seat, but may be caught roaming around checking out things as we go. You would be amazed at the little "rattles" and creaks that we can hear. Sometimes it just takes a little bit of tight packing or bubble wrap to fix that right up.

Looks like the weather will be holding with pretty warm temps forecast so YAY!! Hope y'all have a great weekend!!

Road Trip Ramblings & Introducing LadyBug!

We had SUCH a terrific time on our Road Trip! Talk about lots of girl chit-chat...FIFTEEN hours worth!! I do not think I have ever had so much coffee in one day in my entire life. But the trip was well worth it and we have a cute little LadyBug bichon now. Chloe and Zippo will take a bit of time to get adjusted to the new family member. We will be taking the RV out on its maiden voyage and they will all be going with us. I'm really looking forward to all the new things happening in our lives these days!

The weather was absolutely perfect for our trip...sunny, beautiful blue skies, windmills off in the distance...snow on top of the mountains...I'm attaching some pics so you all can see what we saw! Thanks for all of the kind words!!
